CrossfireX Operation Catalyst overview

CrossfireX Operation Catalyst by Finnish developer Remedy Entertainment.

CrossfireX game from Finnish developer Remedy Entertainment comes at a bad time for its creator. The previous project, Quantum Break, was not a failure, but it did not meet expectations; in addition, there was a disagreement with the publisher, Microsoft.

And the studio went in search of a new partner for their projects. They found it in South Korean giant Smilegate, known in the Asian region for its 2007 shooter Crossfire, which became one of the most successful game projects in the world. As of 2018, the game has brought in around $18 billion for the developers.

The Finns and Koreans had initially intended to create Crossfire 2 when they began working together in 2016. But eventually they decided to make another project, and the result was CrossfireX.

Plot branches

The game’s storyline is divided into two main parts: Operation Catalyst and Operation Spectre. One of the main features of the game is its proprietary engine – Northlight Engine.

As for the story, its main feature is several changes of the main character, that is, throughout the game players (the game has multiplayer feature) can play as several different characters. Eight types of weapons are available to gamers, but according to reviews, only half of them are effective, and some types, such as, for example, sawn-off shotguns, players characterize in short and very concise: “rubbish”.

How players react

In reviews of the game you can find a lot of unflattering evaluations of in-game opponents controlled by artificial intelligence. On the one hand, gamers are satisfied with weak opponents that do not require a lot of troubles to destroy. But when AI controlled enemies run into the bullets, it is clearly too much.

The negative comments about computer opponents’ illogicality in this game can be found in many reviews. The stupidity of these characters is so colossal that it is frankly annoying. For example, the virtual enemy in the shelter can suddenly open fire not at the hero, but… into the wall of the shelter. Players did not sign up for such a “theatre of the absurd”.

CrossfireX, the attempt failed

It seems that the developers have taken care of a variety of level scenarios, to make it interesting for gamers. But the creators of the game seem to have greatly underestimated the mental capacity and skill of the gamers. For an advanced player, it takes 3 to 4 hours to collect all the game artifacts.

The “bright spot” against this backdrop is the very well-designed shooting mechanics. Also the scriptwriters made a fantastic story as the base of the game and tried to diversify the action with various interesting twists and turns. There were also some paranormal phenomena. And here we must give the game creators their due. The storyline really turned out to be quite entertaining.

Conclusion

Speaking of the reviews of the game as a whole, they are very contradictory. In particular, many experts are puzzled why the Korean game industry flagship company has allocated only 2 million dollars for the development of the project with a claim to TOP. Most likely, the lack of funding was the reason for most of the shortcomings that led to criticism against the game.
